Are You Salty?
I just got back from camp. Or I should say camps. Every year we take our church youth to Prangli island for a week, which is a small island just a few miles off the mainland of Estonia. Our campsite has no running water, no electricity, and all of our food is kept in coolers and cooked over an open fire. We bathe in the sea. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a lot more fun than it sounds! This year we took the children’s church a week later, and oh, it was so such a great experience! I think I’m just a giant kid at heart, and had just as much fun as the kid’s did!
Our theme for kid’s camp was “salt and light”. Are you a salty Christian? What does salt do? It preserves, or keeps, and it makes things taste good.
As Christians, we are to taste good to the world! When someone says the word “evangelism”, the picture that comes to my mind is hanging out at the airport or the local mall, waiting to pass out tracks to anyone who doesn’t seem to be in a great hurry. That’s all fine and good, but evangelism is being a salty Christian! We are to live our daily lives in such a way that people want to be around us more. To build people up so that they want to just hang out with us because we’re just so refreshing to be with, and they want to listen to what we have to say! Salt makes people thirsty. Your local bar will serve pretzels or peanuts in order to make people thirstier and want to drink more. What are we doing to make people thirsty for the Lord? Do our actions coincide with our words, and lead people to drink of the Living Water?
